2017 Cointreau Mixologist Challenge

About the Program:

Presented by Liquor.com and sponsored by Rémy Cointreau USA, Inc., the 2017 Cointreau Mixologist Challenge invites bartenders from across the Midwest to create unique, artful Cointreau-inspired cocktails that showcase the complex and balanced flavors for which the French liqueur is famous. Local bartenders enter by submitting their original Cointreau cocktail recipe via the online site (cointreau.liquor.com) hosted by Liquor.com. Semi-Finalists will be selected from among the online entries to compete at local events for a chance to advance to the Finals in Chicago, where One Grand Prize winner will be selected to win $5,000 and will be featured in his/her own Mixology Video! (Total prize value = $10,000)

Methods of Entry (Entry Period: April 24, 2017 – June 15, 2017):

The contest is open to working bartenders who are 25 years of age or older, and are legal residents of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, or Wisconsin. Interested bartenders will register and submit their recipe online via the online entry site cointreau.liquor.com, between April 24, 2017 and June 15, 2017.

Weight of Scoring:

Throughout all selection & judging stages of the 2017 Cointreau Mixologist Challenge, recipes will be judged based on the interpretation of the recipe cocktail, creativity, and background story. In some cases, judges may recreate the cocktails to settle closely ranked submissions. Judges will not take into consideration current employer, time spent bartending or any other personal information in the selection of Regional semi-finalists.

Recipe Criteria:
  • All cocktail recipes must include the following:
  • Creative name.
  • Recipes must be original. An original recipe is the product of one's own mind and is not a copy or imitation.
  • Cointreau as the primary ingredient, using a minimum of 1oz.
  • Cannot include any ingredients that are obscure or hard to find the U.S.
  • Must take five minutes or less to prepare (pre-made syrups and infusions are permitted).
  • Cannot contain more than 6 ingredients (garnish does not count as an ingredient), and can include other Rémy Cointreau portfolio products (Rémy Martin Cognac, Mount Gay Rum, Bruichladdich Scotch, and Botanist Gin).
  • Ingredients must be expressed in fluid ounces (.5 oz., 1 oz., 2 oz., etc.), with dashes and drops being the smallest quantities.
  • Preparation and mixing instructions.
  • A photograph of prepared cocktail.
  • The background story explaining the inspiration of the cocktails’ creation.

*In the event of a tie, the tied Entrant with the higher score in the taste category will be the winner.

2017 Cointreau Mixologist Challenge
2017 Official Contest Rules

  1. SPONSOR: The 2017 Cointreau Mixologist Challenge (“Contest”) is presented and administered by Liquor.com (“Administrator”), and sponsored by Rémy Cointreau USA, Inc. (“Sponsor”), 1290 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10104.
  2. CONTEST PERIOD: The Contest period opens on April 24, 2017, at 12:00:01 a.m. PST and will close on August 31, 2017, at 11:59:59 p.m. PST (“Contest Period”) and consists of (a) Entry Submission Period (“Entry Period”) that will be held between April 24, 2017 and June 15, 2017; (b) Semi-Finalist Selection period (“Semi-Finalist Selection”) that will be held sometime between June 16, 2017 and June 30, 2017; (c) Semi-Finalist Events (“Semi-Finalist Events”) that will be held during July and August 2017; and (d) a Final Event (“Final Event”) held in Chicago, IL in August 2017.
  3. ELIGIBILTY: The contest is only open to individuals who are (a) legal U.S. residents of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, or Wisconsin; (b) are 25 years of age or older at time of entry; and (c) work in a bar at time of entry. Employees of Rémy Cointreau, Liquor.com, their affiliates, liquor wholesale licensees, as well as advertising or promotion agencies and their immediate family members and household members of each and retail license holders are not eligible. This promotion is void wherever prohibited, taxed or restricted by law. In the event the contest is challenged by any legal or regulatory authority, Sponsor or Administrator reserves the right to discontinue or modify the Contest, or to disqualify participants residing in the affected geographic areas. In such event, Sponsor and Administrator shall have no liability to any entrants who are disqualified due to such an action. Contest void wherever prohibited or restricted by law.
  4. ONLINE RECIPE SUBMISSION: To enter, eligible participants must submit a cocktail recipe (“Entry”) that meets the Recipe Criteria described in the official rules. All entries must be submitted during the Entry Period between April 24, 2017 and June 15, 2017 via the online entry site at cointreau.liquor.com. LIMIT OF ONE (1) ENTRY PER PERSON.
    • All eligible cocktail recipe entry submissions must include a fully completed online application which includes providing entrant’s email address, region, name, date of birth, name/address/phone number/website of bar of employment along with (1) recipe name, (2) ingredients, (3) preparation, (4) inspiration / background story, and (5) a photograph of cocktail. Color photographs taken by persons other than the Entrant must be accompanied by consent from the photographer. Include a caption with the photo (as used hereafter, “statement” also includes the captions accompanying photo). The online entry must be submitted no later than 11:59:59 p.m. PST, June 15, 2017.
    • RECIPE CRITERIA: All cocktail recipe entries must include:

  5. SEMI-FINALIST SELECTION: During the Semi-Finalist Selection period between June 16, 2017 and June 30, 2017, a blind panel of judges selected by the Sponsor will judge the cocktail recipes based on the judging criteria identified in the official rules. The judges will select six (6) semi-finalists from each region based on the Scoring System identified in the official rules. Entrants identified a region at time of entry.
    • SCORING SYSTEM: (100 Points)
      1. Cocktail Name (10 points)
      2. Appearance and Presentation (perceived based on description) (10 points)
      3. Balance of Flavors, Aroma & Character (40 points)
      4. Written Background Story / Inspiration (20 points)
      5. Creativity (10 points)
      6. Product Knowledge (10 points)
    • The six (6) Semi-Finalists selected will advance to compete at a local Semi-Finalist Event in their respective region, as they selected in their online entry submission. The Semi-Finalists are responsible for their travel expenses to the Semi-Finalist event, if applicable.
    • Except where prohibited, each Semi-Finalist may be required to complete and return a affidavit of eligibility, a liability/publicity release, and an authorization to conduct a background check. Sponsor reserves the right (in its sole discretion) to disqualify a Semi-Finalist if he/she does not sign the necessary forms within five (5) days of the date notification is sent. If a Semi-Finalist returns these documents on time, he/she will be invited to participate in the Semi-Finalist Event in their respective region, in one (1) of six (6) cities.
  6. SEMI-FINALIST EVENTS:
    • The Semi-Finalist Events will take place in July 2017. During the Semi-Finalist Events, each of the six (6) Semi-Finalists per region compete for a chance to be selected as a regional Finalist. At the Semi-Finalist event, each participant:
      1. Will be provided with a bar set-up that includes Cointreau and the other ingredients needed to prepare their Entry for the judges.
      2. Must create and present prepared servings of their cocktail entry to the panel of judges and audience, in five minutes or less.
      3. Must present the background / inspiration story for their cocktail entry.
    • At the Semi-Finalist Events, each Entry will be tasted and evaluated by the panel of judges based on the Recipe Criteria and Scoring System as identified in the official rules. One (1) recipe at each Semi-Finalist Event will be selected as the Finalist, and will advance to the Final Event.
  7. FINAL EVENT:
    • Trip to the Finals:
      • Liquor.com will send the eight (8) Regional Finalists to compete in the Finals in Chicago, Illinois in August 2017.
      • The trip includes: (a) transportation for one (1) person to Chicago; and (b) hotel accommodations (single occupancy) for one (1) night. The approximate retail value of the trip will vary based on various factors, including the date of booking, the point of departure, and the dates of travel.
      • Liquor.com will execute all travel arrangements for the 8 Regional Finalists.
    • Final Event:
      • The Final Event will take place in August 2017, at a location in Chicago. During the Final Event, each of the eight (8) Finalists per region compete for a chance to be selected as the Grand Prize Winner. At the Final Event, each participant:
        1. Will be provided with a bar set-up that includes Cointreau and the other
        2. ingredients needed to prepare their Entry for the judges.
        3. Must create and present prepared servings of their cocktail entry to the panel of judges and audience, in five minutes or less.
        4. Must present the background / inspiration story for their cocktail entry.
      • Each Entry will be tasted and evaluated by the panel of judges based on the Recipe Criteria and Scoring System as identified in the official rules. One (1) recipe will be selected as the Grand Prize Winner, and will win $5,000 and will be featured in his/her very own Mixology video (Total prize value: $10,000).
    • Prize Conditions: No prize substitution, except by Sponsor in its sole discretion due to unavailability of prize (or any prize element) for any reason and only then for prize/prize element of equal or greater value. No prize transfer. All expenses related to acceptance or uses of prize which are not specified in these Official Rules as well as applicable taxes on prize are winner’s sole responsibility. Winners will be issued a 1099 Tax Form for the fair market value of the prize.
  8. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Entries must be in English. Entries must not allude to the overconsumption or
    • irresponsible consumption of beverage alcohol. Entries that do not include all required information and do not adhere to the foregoing and following requirements will be considered void and will not be considered in the judging of this contest. Entries that are deemed by Sponsor in its sole discretion to be illegal, obscene, profane or not in keeping with Sponsor's image will be disqualified.
    • Recipes must be original. An original recipe is the product of one's own mind and is not a copy or imitation.
    • vAny entries attempted through the use of agencies or robotic, repetitive, automatic, programmed or similar methods will be void. Any attempt by a person to use multiple email accounts or identities to gain more entries than permitted by these Official Rules shall result in disqualification at the sole discretion of Sponsor. In the event of a dispute regarding the identity of the person submitting an entry, the entry will be deemed to be submitted by the "authorized account holder" associated with the email address at the time of entry, which must comply with these Official Rules. The authorized account holder is defined as the natural person who is assigned an e-mail address by the service provider or other organization that is responsible for assigning email addresses. Potential winners may be required to provide evidence (to Sponsor's satisfaction) that they are the authorized account holder of the e-mail address associated with a winning entry. In the event a dispute regarding the identity of the person who actually submitted an entry cannot be resolved to Sponsor's satisfaction, the affected entry will be deemed ineligible. Entries and other submitted material become the property of Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. Refer to Additional rules below for more details regarding the requirements for your entry.
    • By submitting an entry, you warrant that:
      1. You are the creator of the entry
      2. The entry is wholly original
      3. The entry does not infringe on the intellectual property, privacy or publicity rights or any other legal or moral rights of any third party, including any current or former employer, and does not defame any person or identify any person by name other identifying information
      4. The entry has not previously been entered in any other contest
      5. The entry has not been previously published in any medium
      6. The entry does not violate any law or regulation
      7. Sponsor's determination as to whether any entry potentially violates the rights of any third party is final.
  9. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS:
    • By entering this program, you are giving Rémy Cointreau, Liquor.com and its affiliates explicit rights to use your photo, an image of your drink, drink recipe name, and your drink recipe for publicity purposes, including but not limited to: press, social media, digital activation and promotional activation.
    • Each contestant grants to sponsor a worldwide, royalty free, perpetual and unlimited non-exclusive license to edit, adapt, copyright, publish, use, reproduce or distribute the recipe, in any form or manner or media, whether now known or hereafter devised including, without limitation, on the Internet, for any purpose in connection with this competition without further notice or compensation to any contestant.
    • The Grand Prize Winner grants to sponsor a worldwide, royalty free, perpetual and unlimited non-exclusive license to edit, adapt, copyright, publish, use, reproduce or distribute the Grand Prize Winner mixology video, in any form or manner or media, whether now known or hereafter devised including, without limitation, on the Internet, for any purpose in connection with this competition without further notice or compensation to the Grand Prize Winner.
    • Each contestant consents to the publication and/or use of the contestant’s name, city/province of residence, photograph, image and/or likeness in any form or manner or media, whether now known or hereafter devised including, without limitation, on the Internet, for any purpose in connection with this competition without further notice or compensation to any contestant.
    • Each contestant represents and warrants that the recipe submitted by the contestant is the original work of the contestant exclusively, and contestant waives any and all moral rights that he/she may have in the Recipe with respect to the uses contemplated herein.
    • Each contestant represents and warrants that each recipe submitted by the contestant will not infringe any rights (including without limitation copyright, trade-mark, privacy, personality or other property, civil rights or intellectual property rights) of any person.
    • Each contestant agrees, before being named as a Finalist, to sign any and all documents required by Sponsor confirming the foregoing.

Signature Cocktail Competition
Guidelines

  1. This is a spirit on spirit cocktail, with famous brand serving as the base spirit. No muddled fruit, juices and or syrups should be used in making a Signature. Fruits, herbs, essences and spices may be used in infusions however.
  2. Modifiers such as fortified wines, bitters, tinctures, infusions and citrus oils are acceptable variables in a Signature cocktail.
  3. The ratio of modifier(s) to base spirit (famous brand) should never exceed 50:50. The cocktail should be not exceed 3.5 oz.
  4. The Signatures' traditional garnishes are a citrus twist or olives. Cocktail onions are also an acceptable garnish. When thinking of new garnishes, let your imagination run wild.
  5. The cocktail can be served up or on the rocks. In addition, it may be stirred or shaken. Glassware and presentation are up to the contestants.

Preparation

Quick shake the Cointreau, The Botanist Gin, lemon juice, and Rhubarb Strawberry cordial.
Strain into punch glass filled with winding orange twist and pebble ice, top with Lambrusco sparkling wine.
Add several dashes of bitters for aroma and garnish color.

Preparation

Combine all ingredients, including egg white, in cocktail shaker tins.
Shake mixture until properly aerated and incorporated
Unseal tins, and ice, and shake vigorously again for 15-20 seconds, or until cocktail reaches ideal temperature and dilution.
Double-strain cocktail into vintage coupe glass, and garnish with edible flowers.

Combine all ingredients in shaker tin, shake well, double strain into Collins glass.
Use atomizer with mezcal and Cointreau to mist dehydrated lime.

Preparation

Cocktail is built in a shaker tin.
Add two barspoons of greek yogurt.
Shake, double strain and serve up in a chilled couple.
Garnished with fresh grated cinnamon and orange peel zested and discard.
Trim the orange peel and garnish with it on the side of the glass.

Ingredients

1 oz Cointreau®
1.5 oz Housemade Vermouth
4 oz Seltzer
0.25 oz Demerara Syrup
1 dash Jamaican Allspice Bitters
1 Red Licorice Straw

Preparation

Combine seltzer, Demerara syrup, Cointreau, Vermouth, and bitters together in thermos.
Top with ice.
Stir 2-3 times to amalgamate.
Add red licorice straw and serve.
